Prison Island
Prison island also known as Kibandiko , changuu or quarantine island is a small island 3.4 miles, 5.6km north west o stone town, Unguja, Zanzibar. The Island is about 800m and 250m wide at its broadest point. The island was used as a prison for rebellions slaves in 1860 and also as coral mines. The British first minister of Zanzibar ,Lloyd Mathew purchased the island in 1893 and constructed a prison complex there .No prisoner where ever housed on the island and instead it become a quarantine for yellow fever cases, the station was only occupied for around half of the year and the rest of the time it was popular holiday destination. More recent the island has become a government owned tourist result and house collection of endangered Tortoise which was originally a gift from the British governor of the Seychelles.
